2005/6
Worcester City v Kettering Town - Saturday 9th January 2006
An own goal by Kettering's Hugh McAuley and a superb solo effort by Leon Kelly were the highlights for the crowd to talk about on this bitterly cold Winter's day. In truth this was a poor Kettering outfit who sat back much too far in defence and provided little opportunity for ex City striker Christian Moore and Neil Midgley to get the ball.
Worcester were by far the better side and the two goal margin was a correct reflection on proceedings.
Worcester City v Stafford Rangers - Monday 2nd January 2006
A good game between two excellent teams.
Stafford scored first early in the first half and came close to adding a second before Worcester came more into the game with Kelly hitting the crossbar.
City equalised from Adam Webster early in the second half and generally were the better side but it took a last ditch clearance by Les Hines to keep the final score to 1-1.
Worcester City v Hayes - Saturday 18th December 2005
Hayes seemed little better than an average Sunday league pub team as they packed all eleven men into defence, rarely venturing outside their own half of the field.
The main talking point of a very boring first half was the dismissal of Kevin McKenna of Hayes who saw the red mist before his eyes as he earned two bookings inside six minutes of first half madness. After this Hayes went even more defensive.
City pressed home their advantage but were denied by a superb display by the visiting keeper as well as being aided by the crossbar and a goal-line clearance by a defender's head. Anxious to avoid a replay City pressed forward with more determination and eventually a superb through ball from Andy Preece saw George Clegg net with a fine shot.
Hayes were forced out of their defensive shell but failed to mount a single serious attack in the remaining fifteen minutes of play so City progress to Round Two.
Worcester City v Worksop Town - Saturday 11th December 2005
A poor Worksop Town side escaped with a point after a first half effort cancelled out Adam Webster's opening goal for City. Worksop, perhaps the worst team to visit St George's Lane this year, rarely ventured beyond the half way line and their goal was their only attack in the entire game. City had more than enough chances to win the game but poor finishing and an appalling display by the below par officials kept the score to 1-1
Worcester City v Huddersfield Town - Sunday 4th December 2005
FA Cup Second Round
An historic first for Worcester City being their debut appearance live on BBC's "Match of The Day".
The game lived up to its pre-match hype as a capacity crowd saw City do all but win this game against their high-flying Football League opponents.
City's Chris Smith had an early opportunity but shot straight at the visiting keeper before there was a sustained spell of Huddersfield pressure ended with the visitors reduced to ten men after a needless second yellow card. The game remained goalless at half time.
City's Leon Kelly spurned a golden opportunity early in the second after breaking past the visiting keeper only to delay his shot long enough for a defender to clear the ball to safety. The visitors then scored the only goal of the game.
City had further chances from Kelly, Colley and Webster but all went begging. Late on Des Lyttle seemed to be hauled down in the penalty area but nothing was given and Huddersfield held on to gain a trip to Chelsea in the third round.
Worcester City v Kendal Town - Saturday 26th November 2005
F.A. Trophy - Second Round
Kendal were making their first ever trip to St George's Lane and they contributed fully to an interesting game played in very cold conditions.
The only goal of the game went to Worcester with a second half effort by Adam Webster. Worcester were far too strong for their Unibond opposition and only the visiting keeper and some poor decisions by the officials kept the score down. Kendal had a late chance to equalise by Danny McDonnell saved well.
Worcester City v Chippenham Town - Monday 14th November 2005
F.A. Cup First round replay
St George's Lane was packed to the rafters as the largest crowd seen for over 20 years turned up to see this important FA Cup First Round replay. The teams had fought out a 1-1 draw on 5/11/2005 and the replay was to decide who played Huddersfield Town in the Second Round. City were well on top in the first half but were denied by three superb saves from the Chippenham keeper. Little was seen of much vaunted striker James Constable whose only contribution to the first half was to get himself booked.
After the break Chippenham came much more into the game and created a couple of decent chances but the game looked to be heading for extra time until Ian Harvey fouled a City player. It appeared to be a bookable offence but the referee produced a yellow card followed immediately by a red one. This sparked fierce protests from the Chippenham players and it was several minutes before order was restored. With the minds of the Chippenham players obviously elsewhere City struck the decisive goal of the game. Leon Kelly showed good control to find Adam Webster on an inside left channel. The tall striker hit an unstoppable shot into the net. City easily played out the remaining 11 minutes of time.
Statistics : Attendance - 4,006; City goalscorer - Webster (77)
Worcester City v Hednesford Town - Saturday 12th November 2005
This game was all over by half time as City built up a commanding 4-1 lead after some comical defensive lapses had allowed goals by George Clegg, Adam Webster and two from Leon Kelly.
Hednesford pulled the score back to 4-2 but their goalkeeper was then sent off and Les Hines scored from the penalty spot. Leon Kelly then completed his hat-trick as city ran out easy winning by 6 goals to 2.
Chippenham Town v Worcester City - Saturday 5th November 2005
F.A. Cup - First Round proper
Almost exactly a year ago these teams met at St George's Lane for an FA Trophy match that saw City run out comfortable 3-0 winners. No such result was ever likely today as a much improved Chippenham team boasted a 100% home record this season.
City started brightly and were soon in front after a fine finish by Adam Webster. Worcester dominated the first half and should have had more goals. The profligate finishing was made to count as Chippenham scrambled home an equaliser in the first minute of the second half.
For a time it looked as through the home team tactics of playing the long ball through to their two strikers would give them the lead. City though weathered the storm and created several good chances in the last quarter of the game. Adam Webster saw his shot rebound from the bar and Kelly's follow up was saved on the line. Honours even then and so both teams go into the Second Round draw.
Statistics : Attendance - c2,800; City goalscorer - Webster
Worcester City v Barrow - Saturday 29th October 2005
After the excitement of the FA Cup win over Accrington Stanley it was back to the more important task of gaining much needed league points as recent defeats had seen Worcester plunge into the relegation zone.
It was a close encounter but a goal from Des Lyttle as half time approached was enough to give Worcester all three points.
Worcester City v Accrington Stanley - Monday 24th October 2005
F.A. Cup Fourth Round replay
After sn impressive draw away to Accrington City produced an awesome display of attacking football by the City demolished high flying Conference outfit Accrington Stanley who ended this game looking a forlorn and exhausted side.
City dominated the game, hitting the post in the first minute but Accrington soon went into a two goal lead. The Accrington fans must have thought it was game over but they were soon proven wrong. City pulled a goal back with a Chris Smith header.
The second half was one way traffic towards the Stanley goal. Sam Wedgbury and all of the City fans thought he's scored with a long range effort but the linesman ruled it out. Soon after in a rare attack Accrington also had an effort ruled out. With time beginning to run out City stepped up a gear and deservedly equalised through Adam Webster. With extra time looming City were awarded a free kick just outside the box. Andy Dibble made a great save but Rob Warner followed up to net for City.
Perhaps the finest win for the City for 20 years.
Attendance - 1,331; City goalscorers - Smith (30); Webster (75); Warner (89)
Worcester City v Nuneaton Borough - Monday 17th October 2005
Hot on the heels of the visit of the leaders came Nuneaton who were second in the table. In an amazingly similar game to Saturday the visitors also scored once and stole the points although they had keeper Darren Acton to thank for making a string of breathtaking saves, the best of which can be seen be following the link on this site.
Worcester City v Northwich Victoria - Saturday 15th October 2005
The last thing injury hit City needed was to lose two more players in the first twenty minutes but first Sam Wedgbury was carried off on a stretcher and then Leon Kelly followed with a head injury. City were more than a match for a highly professional if somewhat over robust Northwich. However the visitors scored with a deflected shot just before half time - just about their only effort on goal in the game. City huffed and puffed but created little.
Worcester City v Tonbridge Angels - Saturday 8/10/2005
F.A. Cup Third Qualifying Round
This game was billed as a potential "banana skin" for City against the unbeaten leaders of the Ryman Division One. In the event the game failed to live up to this billing as City adopted a more professional approach than their youthful visitors to run out as comfortable winners by three goals to nil with goals from Kelly, Webster and Hyde.
The game was played in miserable weather.
Worcester City v Bemerton Heath Harlequins - Saturday 24th September 2005
Little known West country outfit, Bemerton Heath Harlequins, visited the Lane for a second qualifying round FA Cup tie dreaming of a large payout and cup glory. Instead they found themselves on the receiving end of a seven nil drubbing as their day out ended in a big defeat. It was a case of lambs to the slaughter as a revitalised City striking duo of Leon Kelly and Adam Webster each scored a brace with other goals from Liam Macdonald, Nick Colley and newcomer, Sam Wedgbury. Seven nil wins don't come along too often so this was one for City fans to savour.hind the goalline the linesman (far left) keeps
A welcome win for City to make up for the loss of two points at Moor Green the previous Saturday after an early Webster goal was cancelled out late in the game.
Attendance - 579. Goalscorers: McDonald (14); Colley (33); Webster (45 & 52); Kelly (60 & 75); Wedgbury (66).
Worcester City v Hucknall - Saturday 13th September 2005
There was to be no repeat of City's easy 4-0 here last season as a late breakaway by Hucknall provided the only goal of the game. City had lots of chances but were unable to penetrate a strong defence.
Workington v Worcester City - Saturday 28th August 2005
Worcester dominated this game but still found themselves two goals down at half time due to very slack marking. The second half saw total domination by Worcester who should have scored a hatful of goals. As it was a late equaliser by Jai Stanley salvaged a point in a 2-2 draw.
Worcester City v Gainsborough Trinity - Saturday 20th August 2005
A hot and sunny Saturday afternoon perhaps contributed to a less than impressive crowd at St George's Lane, but those who were there saw Worcester win their first game of the season.
The first half was all Worcester with goals scored from the head of Chris Smith and the boot of Graham Hyde. However Gainsborough fought hard in the second half and got back into the game with a fine shot five minutes from time, but City held firm to record a 2 - 1 win.
Worcester City v Hinckley United - Monday 17th August 2005
A nice evening and a decent crowd saw an entertaining game between two well matched sides but neither side could fashion out a goal. It was also a bad night for former City hero, Carl Healey, who was sent off for two bookable offences.
Following on from Saturday's City 2-1 defeat at Kettering on Saturday, this point was not what the City fans wanted from the game.
